Personal Log: I Hate Winter
February 2nd, 2012
I know the changing seasons are good for the Earth and just part of the genius of God’s Creation. That doesn’t keep me from hating the stupid cold. Sulu knows what I’m talkin’ about. Don’t you, Sulu? Sulu??…SULU!!!
There’s a reason C.S. Lewis had the White Witch in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe curse Narnia so that it was always Winter and never Christmas. The symbolism of Christ bringing new life from lifelessness, right? Yes. But also because, with the exception of Christmas, Winter is horrible. Just horrible.
I’m a Texas boy. Yes, it gets cold here. Not often into subzero, but bitter, nasty cold with high winds and drenching, freezing rain. This is usually followed by a brief reprieve and then–BAM!—ice and snow. It’s February’s evil trick.
So far, February has been kind (I give it a week) and the Winter here overall has been generally mild. But the weather changes have resulted in my wife and two year-old son getting sick. And, yeah, I’ve had some trouble too.
It hasn’t been too bad. Just a lot of gunk and a bit of a sore throat. But it was sore enough to cause me to have to cancel our commentary recording session this week. This was Winter’s way of hiding around the corner and shooting a big spit wad at me, just to say, “I’m still here and I’m still EEEVIL!!”
Yeah, things could be worse (though there are few worse sounds in the world than my wife and baby boy with a nasty cough), but I really hate missing my weekly meetings with Tim. Trek & Tacos, as I call it (referring to our weekly feast of Tex-Mex and geekery), is more than just a recording session. It’s a time for the Captain and the First Officer to meet in the Ready Room and reassess the progress of the mission.
It’s the engine of all things UCP, really.
And, though we do get work done, it’s also a time of rest. It’s a sacred moment in my week, full of great conversation, Christian brotherhood and Star Trek. With tacos!! Who could ask for a better Sabbath?
So, I really hated missing this week. It’s okay if there’s a real issue. But my throat being screwed up and making me afraid of being contagious because of the stupid cold?? That’s just pointless.
Except, that is, that it has caused me to pause and appreciate the goodness of Trek & Tacos. That’s great. I’d like to get back to work now!
I hope your week has been better than mine. Sulu’s thawed and I should be operating within normal parameters in time for next Tuesday’s session. And maybe by then, I’ll have forgiven Winter.

I hope you are feeling better and I like your humor and attitude! I know we are supposed to give thanks even in hardship but who can be grateful for a cold! maybe you and your family should move to Florida!- Kevin C. Neece says:

Hey, Becky! Yes, I and my family are thankfully doing much better! My computer, on the other hand, has not fared as well–one reason for my protracted absence of late. I’m staying in Texas, though. Family’s here and I love this area. Wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Winter misery happens here, but it’s mild compared to so many places. Thanks for checking in.

Well, I’m glad you and your family are doing better! I admit, despite Florida’s beautiful weather, I’d like to move to a different area of the country or even to Canada one day to broaden my horizons. I hope you can resolve your computer issues soon. I enjoy your work and excellent commentary!- Kevin C. Neece says:

Thanks very much! I hope your horizon-broadening is successful someday. And thanks for your kind words. They are much appreciated. Speaking of commentary, though, I’ve been busy behind the scenes even if the blog has bogged down a bit. There is more to come!

I look forward to future postings and would encourage you and a friend or fan to create your own podcast on Religion and Star Trek! For instance, I can think of some fascinating topics including Q’s character and how he fits into your analysis! Are you going to cover all the series and movies as well?- Kevin C. Neece says:

It’s that work that has taken up the majority of my UCP-focused time, actually. We are at least doing TOS and TNG, probably the movies as well. We’ll see about the rest.

I look forward to seing your findings and would love to be apart of your project. Is Undiscovered Country Project funded as part of a research study or are you conducting this research for personal purposes. In short, is this study of Star Trek connected to your other scholarly pursuits? Just curious.
