Relics: Podcasting with Treknobabble
January 20th, 2012
I was honored to join Matthew Weflen, Kevin Curran and company for theirpodcast on the Season 6 TNG episode “Relics.” This wasn’t my first time on the podcast, but that’s another story…
Previously, I guested on the Treknobabble’s crew on the podcast for the Season 5 TNGepisode “The Next Phase.” But, that didn’t turn out so well. Due to technical problems on my end, I was apparently (and fittingly) phased into another dimension. Still, we had a good chat about UCP and you can catch that podcast here.
This time, I was very glad to be along for the ride as Scotty returned to the Enterprisein “Relics.” It’s a great episode and a fan favorite and I had a great time with everyone. I really love the idea in this episode that even the best of us may too easily dismiss our elders.
Reminds me of Paul’s words in I Timothy 5:1, “Do not address an older man harshly but appeal to him as a father.” (NET) Also Proverbs 16:28, “Gray hair is like a crown of glory; it is attained in the path of righteousness.” (NET)
Of course, for Picard, a good bit of that “crown of glory” is only, shall we say, metaphorical.
Aside from that, this was a really fun podcast with a great, welcoming group of people whose geekdom I heartily admire. My thanks to Matthew, Kevin (the other Kevin) and Elizabeth for making me feel at home. To listen to the podcast, click here or on the image below.

Kevin, you had some insightful things to say, especially about treatment of the elderly – which hadn’t been a theme I thought about primarily in conjunction with this episode. It was the fish out of water stuff that had more so caught my eye previously.

Thanks, Matthew! I enjoyed it. As to the “fish out of water” theme, either you or Kevin made the comparison to Rip Van Winkle, which I hadn’t thought of, but is quite appropriate for Scotty’s situation in the episode. It’s the disorienting struggle of adjusting to a world that has moved on without you. I suppose it could make one feel one’s world had been turned inside-out…
…not unlike a Dyson sphere.
